What this service covers

From something as simple as a cut plate to full steel erection, this is the mechanical work that keeps a plant changing without stopping: profile and plate cutting in the workshop, fit-up and edge preparation, then placement, bolting and alignment on site — including openings cut into existing frames and supports fitted around equipment that keeps running.

The service is the single line under mechanical works. Typical jobs include tie-ins during shutdowns, pipe-rack sections, conveyor supports and equipment platforms — work planned with operations and executed inside the permitted window.

Cut once, installed by the same crew

Work runs from marked-up drawings or field dimensions taken by our surveyors. Pieces are cut to tolerance, edges prepared for welding, fit-up checked — then the crew that cut them installs them, so nothing about the piece is learned twice on site.

Records travel with the pieces: marked drawings, weld numbers and material identification, so your inspector can trace any weld back to the drawing it came from.

Cutting tolerances and preparation standards are set by what the piece has to do: a bolted connection needs holes match-drilled to the fit-up plan, a welded joint needs bevels ground to the procedure and a clean root, and an equipment support needs the contact face flat. Calibrated tools are used for layout, and any piece outside tolerance goes back to the table before it ever reaches the crane.

Live plant, permitted windows

On an operating plant the window is fixed by production. We plan around permits, isolation points and traffic routes, hold a fire watch wherever cutting or welding takes place, and move the crew in when the window opens rather than improvising on the day.

Where beams or supports frame new equipment into an existing structure, dimensions are surveyed first and the piece is fabricated to the measured reality — not the drawing alone.

Permits are prepared before the window opens, not requested during it: hot-work permits, gas tests, isolation certificates and the fire watch roster are in place, and the crew is briefed on escape routes and emergency contacts. Isolation boundaries are respected physically, not just on paper — blinds installed, lines drained, and a named person at each boundary. That preparation is what makes a shutdown window work instead of drift.

Fewer interfaces

Booking cutting and installation with one contractor removes the usual handover between workshop and site, which keeps fit-up and welding speeds up and accountability in one place.

One crew also means the record is continuous: the person who cut the piece writes the weld number, the fitter who installs it signs the fit-up, and the inspector sees one traceable chain rather than two reports that may or may not describe the same work. Re-work decisions take minutes instead of a meeting, because the people deciding are the ones who made the cut.

Where the work touches primary structure it is coordinated with the steel structures scope; where it continues after handover, it feeds into field maintenance. Send drawings or scope notes and we will price it within 48 hours.

FAQ

Common questions

Both — the same crew cuts the piece, prepares it and installs it, so nothing is handed over mid-job.
