CASE STUDY

Fall-arrest rails on six gantry cranes and 620 m of walkway guardrail in seven weeks.

The challenge

Maintenance crews climbed six container gantry cranes with only a temporary lanyard point. Work windows were dictated by crane bookings, sea-breeze gusts frequently exceeded rope-access limits, and no crew could be off a crane during a container move.

Our approach

We installed fall-arrest rails on the crane access ladders and walkways during booked maintenance windows, with every bracket fitted to the crane structure by load-checked bolts rather than site welding. Walkway guardrails with toe boards ran the length of each gantry, ladder lifelines covered the climbs, and crews worked from approved exclusion zones with a banksman in radio contact with the crane cab.

The result

Seven weeks — six gantries, 620 m of guardrail and 6 ladder systems certified. Not one container move was delayed, zero lost-time incidents across 6,900 safe man-hours, and the gantries were handed back with inspection schedules agreed for re-certification.

  • Load-checked bracket bolting (no site welding)
