CASE STUDY

3.2 km collector road opened three weeks early with 58,000 m³ of earthworks in 13 weeks.

The challenge

A 3.2 km collector road linking an industrial cluster to the regional highway crossed soft wadi deposits and had to open before a logistics operator took possession of the adjoining plot. Material haul was 300 km each way, winter night temperatures in Ha’il dropped below 10°C, and a wadi crossing needed scour protection sized for flash floods.

Our approach

Subgrade was undercut 1.2 m through the wadi deposits and replaced with geotextile-separated select fill, plate-load verified. Base course came from a nominated quarry with monthly gradation checks, and asphalt paving ran in daytime-only windows with night compaction prohibited below 12°C surface temperature. The wadi cross-drain and rip-rap scour protection were completed before the first winter rain, and traffic was switched onto the new road for the final 800 m tie-in.

The result

Thirteen weeks — three weeks inside programme: 3.2 km opened, 58,000 m³ moved, all density and ride tests passed, zero lost-time injuries across 21,200 safe man-hours at a peak crew of 32.

Scope delivered

  • Wadi-deposit undercut & select-fill replacement
  • Geotextile separation & density testing
  • Sub-base and binder from nominated quarry
  • Wadi cross-drain & rip-rap scour protection
  • Asphalt paving within temperature windows
  • Final tie-in & traffic switch
