CASE STUDY

7,800 m² of heavy-duty hardstanding built in 10 weeks inside a live refinery traffic plan.

The challenge

A tank-farm laydown area needed heavy-duty hardstanding rated for 40-tonne axle loads, plus utility trenching — all inside an operating refinery where every excavation needed permit, gas test and a service owner’s sign-off. Buried fire-water mains ran across the planned slab with no accurate drawings.

Our approach

We vacuum-excavated probe holes to locate every buried service before mass excavation, then built the section in 150 mm lean concrete and a 200 mm reinforced slab with saw-cut joints over the mains corridor. Trenching for new drainage ran in two halves so refinery traffic kept one lane, and all concrete pours were scheduled before the midday ban with curing blankets through the summer nights.

The result

Ten weeks: 7,800 m² commissioned with all core samples passing, zero service strikes across 34 excavations, zero lost-time injuries across 15,400 safe man-hours at a peak crew of 26, and no unplanned road closure in the refinery traffic plan.

Scope delivered

  • Vacuum-excavation probing for buried services
  • Subgrade preparation & lean-concrete layer
  • 200 mm reinforced slab for 40 t axles
  • Utility trenching in half-width phases
  • Drainage laid with summer curing regime
  • Core samples & load testing at handover

Thirty-four excavations in a live refinery and not one service strike. Their probing discipline is the reason.
