Beam Fabrication & Installation

Plate and rolled beams fabricated, delivered and installed by our own crews — lifting plan, bolting and alignment included.

What beam work covers

This service covers the full life of a beam: connection details prepared and submitted, fabrication in our workshop, delivery against your programme, then placement, alignment and bolting by our own crews. One contractor owns the member from drawing to installed steel.

Work includes rolled sections and built-up plate girders — the latter used where spans or loads outgrow standard profiles. Stiffeners, end plates, shear tabs and splice details are fabricated to the approved design, with bolt holes match-drilled so the fit on site is predictable.

Connection details are prepared for approval before fabrication starts: end-plate bolt grades and spacing, weld sizes and lengths, and splice locations all follow the engineer's design basis. We flag any detail that cannot be built as drawn — an inaccessible bolt, a weld that cannot be reached from both sides — and put the alternative in writing before work proceeds. Where standard connections suit, they are detailed once and repeated consistently across the job, which keeps procurement and inspection straightforward.

Lifting, landing and bolting

Before the first lift, we set the crane position, rigging arrangement, beam weights and exclusion zones, and we agree the sequence with your site team so the structure stabilises as it grows. Temporary bracing is placed wherever the design requires it before crews move on.

Each beam is landed, plumbed and levelled to survey tolerance, then bolted under the specified installation procedure — torque or turn-of-nut, recorded. Welded splices are completed by the same qualified welders from our steel fabrication workshop.

Temporary stability is never assumed: where the design relies on permanent bracing or decking to hold the frame, those elements are installed in the same sequence before the crane moves on. Connection bolts are tightened in the order the procedure specifies — faying surfaces first, then turns — and each row is logged against the beam mark, so the record matches the steel rather than a memory of the shift.

Working around live operations

In an operating plant, the lift window is often fixed by production. We plan around permits, isolation points and traffic routes, and we move the crew and crane in when the window opens rather than improvising on the day.

Where beams frame new equipment into an existing structure, dimensions are surveyed on site first and fabrication follows the measured reality — not the drawing alone.

Lifts are executed under a method statement that names the crane, the operator, the banksman and the rigging gear, with current certificates checked before the crane arrives on site. Beams are controlled with tag lines rather than hands, exclusion zones are taped and briefed, and no one stands under a suspended load — including during trials of the balance. If weather closes the window, the lift waits; a postponed beam costs an hour, a dropped one costs far more.

Coordination with operations covers more than the lift window: the crane stays clear of running roads and air intakes, exclusion zones are agreed with your safety team, and the crew briefs the day shift so people on the ground know what is happening above them. Noise and hot work are scheduled around plant routines, and housekeeping is maintained daily, because an operating site has nowhere to put your offcuts. Each area is signed off with your supervisor before the crew moves on.

What you receive at handover

The package closes with a survey of installed beams, plumbness and level records, bolt installation records, and as-built details where connections changed on site.

If bracing or secondary members are still to come, they are sequenced into the same programme through steel column bracing and secondary steel works. Book a site survey and we will walk the scope with you.
